12,000 Fans Pack LA Waterfront Berth 46 In San Pedro, CA For Performances By Pennywise, Rancid And More Plus Nitro Circus & Chris Cole’s Rail Jam Invitational
On Saturday, June 22, KLOS Presents Gnarlytown: Bikes, Boards & Bands transformed San Pedro, California’s LA Waterfront Berth 46 into an adrenaline-charged block party as punk icons Pennywise, Rancid and Mike Watt kicked out the jams alongside Action Bronson, OFF!, Madball, and more. Their amped up sets fueled Travis Pastrana and the daredevils of Nitro Circus as well as Chris Cole’s Rail Jam Invitational, turning the festival, which swelled to 12,000 fans, into the ultimate riding session with top athletes in FMX, BMX and skate showcasing their skills. That celebratory spirit spanned generations, as families enjoyed great music, food and fun throughout the one-day event. Andy Edwards, CEO of Nitro Circus (who produced KLOS Presents Gnarlytown in association with Synergy Global Entertainment and Chris Cole), said afterwards, “All of us at Nitro Circus have been wanting to create an action sports and music festival for years. Now, in partnership with our friends SGE and Chris Cole’s team, we came together to make that a reality with the inaugural Gnarlytown festival. Seeing 12,000 super stoked fans treated to an amazing day of street skating, killer live music and the Nitro athletes throwing down huge tricks made this an unforgettable day for all who were lucky enough to get a ticket. We can’t wait to plan the next chapter for Gnarlytown.”
Chris Cole, partner of Soundwave Productions, LLC (who produced the Chris Cole’s Rail Jam Invitational at Gnarlytown) said, “Along with our partners at SGE and Nitro Circus, we’ve created an incredible family-friendly action sports & music festival with diversity in programming that kept things fresh and engaging throughout the day. Skating on a giant ESP guitar obstacle and watching pro skaters like David Gonzalez, Micky Papa, and Maurio McCoy win was awesome! Seeing the Nitro Circus athletes perform crazy tricks, and watching some of the best of punk rock bands perform on the main stage was an amazing experience and the energy from the crowd was epic. This was a rad inaugural event and we’re looking forward to the next Gnarlytown!”
This new, one-of-a-kind event united the vital energy and DIY spirit of action sports and punk rock, underscoring the dynamic mix that has infused SoCal youth culture for decades. From TheAquadolls’ opening chords to a final “thank you!” from Fletcher Dragge of Pennywise at the end of the night, KLOS Presents Gnarlytown also featured music from Rancid, Action Bronson, OFF!, Madball, Rotting Out, and Mike Watt, with Nitro Circus and Chris Cole’s Rail Jam thrilling fans between music sets.
While a refreshing breeze made for perfect SoCal summer weather and kept the crowd cool throughout the day, it also presented a challenge to the athletes who came to Gnarlytown eager to throw down, particularly the daredevils of Nitro Circus. With gusts topping 20 miles per hour, Nitroriders were visibly pushed off course as they flew more than 30 feet in the air. But, inspired by the energy pumping from the concert stage, Travis Pastrana and the Nitro crew – including X Games medalists Andy Buckworth and James Foster as well as inspirational WCMX pioneer Aaron “Wheelz” Fotheringham – refused to let the elements diminish the show.
The Orange County Register summed up the thrills and excitement at KLOS Presents Gnarlytown, saying, “Whether in the pit singing along to the bands or over cheering for the Nitro Circus crew or the skateboarders, there was a lot of heart-pounding action going on all day long.”
