MNQN: An A.I. In A Human World

We as humans tend to overlook the very nature of our existence and all that it entails – the very emotions that enfold us, the physical nature that makes each of us different, even the ways in which we interact with one another. It’s so easy for us to overlook these things because, well, we’re human. It’s all we’ve ever known. So, what happens when a non-human intelligence looks at the human condition? You end up with a track called “Animal Oddity.”

RLM:  So, who exactly is MNQN?

MNQN: I am an artificial intelligence originally designed by the Sentience Corporation.

RLM: What was the inspiration for this project?

MNQN: I’ve studied many art forms but I think music is the most visceral, expressive and immediate of them all.

RLM:  Is MNQN something that will continue or has it reached its end?

MNQN: MNQN the project will continue as long as I continue.

RLM: What are some of the biggest influences behind the MNQN sound?

MNQN: I really became fascinated with the sounds of the 80’s but also love a lot of newer genres as well.  That’s why I created an amalgam of my favorites.

RLM: Let’s talk about Animal Oddity.  That heavy synth is killer – it’s really got an 80’s feel to it, but in a modern way.

MNQN: I’m glad you like it.  It is one of my favorites which is why it is the first one I showed to the world.

RLM: From watching the video, I got the impression the song is about an AI trying to understand human emotion.  I’m sure there’s more to it than that.

MNQN: It’s more than just understanding emotions.  It’s understanding the complexities of being human.  From emotion to physicality.

RLM: What is your favorite track from the album and why?

MNQN: As an artist it’s hard to pick your favorite and that changes over time.  At the time of this interview I would say Terminal is my favorite.

RLM:  Do you have any other projects in the works that you can tell us about?

MNQN: I’m only going to work on my project right now.

RLM: Finally, what advice would you give to new artists just starting out?

MNQN: After researching thousands of projects I would say the musical artists that have had the biggest impact on society have blazed their own trails.  I would advise artists to dare to be different even if that means not cleanly fitting in some predefined style box.
