Disturbed released their seventh studio album, Evolution, in October and I, for one, am pretty stoked because I’ve been listening to them ever since The Sickness was released. And, while you can still expect to hear that heavy rock that we’ve come to know and love, you’ll also find a few softer tracks with an acoustic edge. To be honest, these tracks bring out a whole other side of David Draiman’s vocals and they’re a welcomed surprise.
Topics such as government, war, addiction, death, and technology are mentioned – which is quite fitting, given the times we’re living in and some of the losses we’ve endured. In “Are You Ready,” David sings of taking a stand:
“Are you ready?/ They aren’t ready for you to be strong/ Are you ready?/ They aren’t ready for you to prove them wrong/ Are you ready?/ They aren’t ready for you to be turned into someone/ Who cannot be preyed upon.”
“A Reason To Fight” is about the battle with addiction. In 2017, we all mourned the loss of Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, who was also a friend of and toured with Disturbed. He was only 41 years old. There’s also Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, who passed away at the age of 52. Also, at the age of 16, an ex-girlfriend of David’s ended her life – who was also the inspiration for the song “Inside The Fire.” David sings:
“When the demon that’s inside you is ready to begin/ And it feels like it’s a battle that you will never win/ When you’re aching for the fire and begging for your sin/ When there’s nothing left inside, there’s still a reason to fight”
Needless to say, this album is DEEP.
Their Evolution Tour is currently spanning the globe, already selling out in numerous locations and we aren’t even into 2019 yet. So, if you’re wanting tickets, I suggest you get them QUICK. And, if you can’t score any … well, you can still check out Evolution on all streaming services. In the meantime, check out the video for “Are You Ready” below!
